TAIWAN / USA – The government of Taiwan continues to promote participation at the United Nations, urging the United Nations and the international community to face up to the 23.5 million Taiwanese people's firm expectations of participating at the United Nations General Assembly, (UNGA76).

The 76th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 76) will  open on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 , at United Nations Headquarters, in New York. The general debate will be held from September 21- 27.

The theme of this year's UN General Assembly is: “ Building resilience through hope – to recover from COVID-19, rebuild sustainability, respond to the needs of the planet, respect the rights of people, and revitalize the United Nations “.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), via a press release, said:

“Reflecting the ravages of Wuhan Pneumonia (COVID-19) more than a year later, the world is eagerly looking forward to a stronger and more inclusive United Nations to resolve the crisis and move towards a better recovery and sustainable reconstruction” and“to show the international community that the people of Taiwan are deeply looking forward to participating in the UN system and that Taiwan is ready, willing, and able to participate in the UN's efforts at a critical moment when the world is working together towards recovery, the government will invite allies to join the UN system this year. “In addition to the general debate speaking for our country, we also invite all countries to write to United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, urging the Secretary-General to abide by the principles of the UN Charter and face up to Taiwan's 23.5 million people who have been improperly excluded from the UN system for a long time.”

The three major demands of the government of Taiwan are continuous:

First, the United Nations should take immediate action to resolve the situation where 23.5 million Taiwanese people have been improperly excluded from the United Nations system;

Second, the United Nations improperly deprives Chinese people and the media of access to the United Nations, the right to visit, interview and/or attend conferences and events should be corrected immediately; and,

Third, the United Nations should ensure that Taiwan has the right to participate equally and with dignity in the meetings, mechanisms and activities related to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and make decisions contribute.

To convey the demands to the international community, minister of foreign affairs, Wu Zhaoxie published a special article in the mainstream international media under the title ” Reimagining a more resilient UN system with Taiwan in it “, emphasizing that although the United Nations system is in under pressure from China, it continues to incorrectly quote the UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 and improperly exclude Taiwan from participating. China is still willing to play a constructive role in the UN system with self-sacrifice; meanwhile, the ministry of foreign affairs also plans to produce a short film that echoes the theme of the UN General Assembly to demonstrate Taiwan's importance to the people, with attention to rights, and active actions to implement SDGs.

Taiwan’s strong willingness to contribute to the region and the world is an indispensable solid partner in the global fight against the epidemic and recovery after the epidemic.

During UNGA 76, the government of Taiwan will organize peripheral activities on topics such as “International Humanitarian Care”, “Sustainable Development” and “Science and Technology Epidemic Prevention”.

MOFA has also used creativity, through social media and other diversified methods, to give a strong voice to the international community and promote the power of friends. In addition, the overseas Chinese community still spontaneously organizes various support activities during the epidemic to expand the support of various countries for Taiwan's international participation, says MOFA, expresses its affirmation and gratitude in particular.

Striving to participate in the United Nations is a long-term task, and although it is arduous, MOFA acknowledged the joint efforts of international governments, allies, and the private sector over the years, and the support of the international community that has continued to increase.

“We sincerely appreciates the support of our friends and countries for promoting Taiwan's participation in the United Nations system and once again call on the United Nations to face up to Taiwan's substantive contribution to the global post-epidemic recovery and sustainable reconstruction and its determination to give back to the international community,” said MOFA. “Now is the time for the United Nations to accept Taiwan and let Taiwan help. The United Nations should take immediate action to accept the participation of 23.5 million Taiwanese people.”
