Qatar- 54 baby hawksbill turtles released to sea at Fuwairit


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), represented by the Department of Protection and Wildlife, released to the sea 54 baby hawksbill turtles, from the first batch of hatchlings recorded on June 8 at Fuwairit Beach.
The project team concerned had transported 118 nests of the endangered hawksbill turtles to the protected site at Fuwairit Beach. The turtle protection project under the supervision of the MME and funded by Qatar petroleum is implemented by the Environmental Sciences Centre at Qatar University in co-operation with a team from the Department of Protection and Wildlife.
The project covers Ras Laffan beach, Huwaila, Al Jassasiya, Al Marawanah, Fuwairit, Al Gharia and Al Mufeer and the islands of Umm Tais and Ras Rukn.
Earlier, at the beginning of the turtle nesting season, the MME, in co-operation with the Environmental Protection Reserves and Wildlife Department and the Department of Public Hygiene (Beaches and Islands Section) carried out a cleanliness drive on Fuwairit Beach and removed two tonnes of various types of waste.
