(MENAFN- QYresearch.us) If you are here, I am sure you have some idea or interest in cyber-security.

Developed by Mati Aharoni and Devon Kearns of Offensive Security, Kali Linux is a Linux distribution system specially designed for ‘Penetration Testing and Ethical Hacking.’ KALI got its name from  K ernel  A uditing  Li nux, as it is intended to focus on kernel auditing.

In this article, I am going to show you the step-by-step process of how to install Kali Linux using VMware Workstation.

How to Install Kali Linux using VMware?

The process of installing Kali Linux on using a virtualization involves following steps:

  • Following article shall describe how to install Kali Linux in a step-by-step manner with adequate description for each.

Suggested: Which one is better?: Windows or Linux .

    Step I: Install virtualization software

To run Kali Linux, first, we need virtualization software, it allows you to run more than one Operating system in a single computer. There are many virtualization software such as Oracle VM Virtual Box, VMware Fusion, VMware Workstation, etc.

Here we are using VMware Workstation. We are considering that the user has already installed any one of these virtualization software. Download link pertaining to each of the virtualization software are as follows:

    VMware Workstation https://www.vmware.com/in/products/workstation-pro/workstation-pro-evaluation.html
    Oracle VM virtualbox https://www.virtualbox.org/
    VMware fusion https://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/fusion-evaluation.html
    Xen Project (Free) https://xenproject.org/

    After installing, run VMware Workstation.

Step II: Download Kali Linux ISO File

Go to the  official site  of kali Linux and download the ISO or image file, which is appropriate for your PC.

You should download the Kali Linux 64-Bit Installer, which would run without an internet connection.

Kali Linux is mainly intended for security-related tasks. So, it is essential to check the integrity of the image file. For that, compare the SHA-256 fingerprint of the downloaded file and the hexadecimal number given on the site.

    Prerequisites

Before start installing Kali Linux, we recommend you to do two things first:

    • Disconnect the internet connection because, with an active internet connection, it downloads packages from its mirror. Since we downloaded the installer version, we do not need other packages.
    • Enable virtualization: To see whether your virtualization is on or not.
      • Go to your command prompt.
      • Write ‘systeminfo’ and enter.
      • In the bottom, you can see the virtualization status. It should say ‘Yes’; otherwise, you have to enable it.

Step 5. Enter the name of your virtual machine. You can also change the location of your virtual machine at this step.

Step 6. Next, you have to specify the maximum disk size available to the Virtual machine. As you will be doing testing or for security purposes, 20GB is enough for Kali Linux, but I chose 25GB to be on a safer side.
