US officials visit Turkey to launch Syria safe zone joint operation center
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ANKARA, Aug 12 (KUNA) -- An American delegation arrived in Turkey on Monday ahead of the opening of a joint operation center for a planned safe zone in northeast Syria, as agreed upon by both countries, the Turkish Defense Ministry said.
The six-member American contingent will be working with their Turkish partners to make sure the operation center is up and running within the next few days, according to the ministry.
Turkey's Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said earlier on Monday that the joint operation center with Washington to manage a planned safe zone in northeast Syria would open soon.
Turkey considers the move an alternative to military action in Syria to flush out remnants of the Kurdish YPG militia, an offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers party (PKK), which Ankara designates as a terrorist group. (pickup previous)
