Oman- MHC prohibits construction work around Bahla Fort
A Ministerial Decision No 81/2019 to this effect was issued by H H Sayyid Haitham bin Tariq al Said, Minister of Heritage and Culture on May 13.
According to the decision any construction activity related to commercial, infrastructure or water management work is prohibited unless a permit is acquired from the ministry.
The ministry will also work to document and protect all traditions, crafts, and commercial traditional activities in the area. It may also provide a recommendation to approve funding or financing from the private sector for any traditional craft projects in or around the fort. The decision will be effective after 60 days of its publication.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Tourism (MoT) has said that 366,360 people visited forts and castles across the sultanate last year. 'As many as 366,360 visited forts and castles in Oman until the end of 2018 compared to 319,163 in 2017, registering an increase of 14.8 per cent. The ministry said that of these 47,792 were Omanis, 8,514 were GCC nationals and 7,586 Arabs.
MoT said that 23,397 school students visited forts and castles last year while the number of visitors under the age of 12 stood at 27,991. Oman has many forts such as Al Jalali Fort, Al Mirani Fort, Bahla Fort, Al Fiqayn Fort, Muttrah Fort and Nizwa Fort.
