Oman- Sri Lankans express shock on bombings

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Easter Sunday bomb blasts that killed more than two hundred people in Sri Lanka have left the community members in Oman in shock and despair.

Many in Oman whoMuscat Daily spoke to said they are in 'shock' after a series of bomb blasts on one of the holiest days in the Christian calendar.

'Everyone here is in a state of shock on what happened today. We have no information on who did it. We request the community here to be calm and stand in solidarity with our people back home with lots of prayers and hope,' a senior Sri Lankan Embassy official said.

While many expressed fear, others were scrambling for news on the safety of loved ones back home. 'It is very sad to see this happening. We pray for those who lost their lives. It should not have happened especially on this day,' Sharuka Wickrama Adittiya, country manager for SriLankan Airlines, said.

On whether the flights of the airline were affected, Adittiya said, 'Till now, flights are running as usual. However, we have had few who just wanted to travel at later dates. All this will be arranged for free.'

For many, the incident brought back brutal memories of the civil war, which came to an end exactly ten years ago next month.

K Priyanka, another Sri Lankan employed with the Omani government, said, 'It's a terrible situation. We had grudges between different groups but we have to forget everything now. It's a very difficult situation, but hatred can only be overcome by understanding each other.'

R Shivalingam, a Sri Lankan employed in the private sector, said, 'I was really saddened to hear of this brutal attack on the worshippers on an important day of their religion. I condemn this attack on innocent people. This is the first time we hear of such organised attacks on different locations in the country.

'This is a blow to the unity of people belonging to different races and religions and the economy of the country. We came out of a bloodbath in the country following 30 years of war. It's pathetic some people still want to push the country back to that situation.'
