Bouteflika Algerian elections candidacy threat to stability, says opposition

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ALGIERS, March 7 (KUNA) -- Political opposition parties in Algeria have condemned the leadership's "disregard" of their rejection of the candidacy of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who has been in his post since 1999, saying this threatens stability.

In a statement, a total 15 parties, four workers' unions and 35 prominent figures said that holding upcoming presidential elections, under these circumstances represents a "threat to the stability and unity of the nation." After attending a joint meeting, they praised ongoing peaceful protests around the country, denouncing what they deemed was "pressure", being applied on local media, and foreign intervention in the country's internal affairs.

Nationwide protests calling against the 82 year-old president's decision to run again for office have been ongoing since February 22. (end) mr.sd
