Chile: two die in powerful earthquake

(MENAFN) The US Geological Survey declared that an earthquake of a 6.7 magnitude has rattled the coast of north-central Chile, as authorities reported power outage on 200,000 people and the death of two more of heart attacks.

The USGS added that the quake took place 16 km south-southwest of Coquimbo, hitting 53 km deep into the ground.

It rattled homes, triggered landslides in the region's mountainous terrain and initially sparked authorities to launch a mass clear out of coastal areas ahead of a potential tsunami.

An elderly man and woman have been pronounced dead in cardiac arrest suspected to be linked to the earthquake, according to police.
