HBKU college to host colloquium on Jan 16

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The College of Law and Public Policy (CLPP) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) will host a colloquium on Representing States in Public International Law Disputes
on January 16 from 4pm to 6pm.
The colloquium, in Conference Room 1, Minaretein (College of Islamic Studies Building) in Education City, will explore the unique challenges to legal counsel when representing a State in a dispute against another State.
The event in English is open to the public. Dr Susan L Karamanian, dean of CLPP, will chair the event with guest speaker Peter Tzeng, an international lawyer based in Washington, DC at the law firm Foley Hoag.
Tzeng exclusively advises and represents countries on matters relating to public international law and international investment law. He also previously worked at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
Speaking ahead of the event, Dr Karamanian said: 'HBKU continually seeks to promote a dialogue and exchange of knowledge on timely and important issues, particularly in the international realm.
'Tzeng's insights, based on his experience and in-depth understanding of substantive issues, will provide the audience with an informed
perspective on the topic.
The colloquium will focus on case studies involving international disputes between countries, such as Ukraine and Russia, Philippines and China, and Iran and the US.
Tzeng will examine how lawyers for the respective parties tackled the cases. Plenty of time will be available for audience questions and comments.
Tzeng has noted that he is 'excited to share [his] experiences working in public international law with the HBKU community.
CLPP offers multidisciplinary training programmes to graduate students, equipping them with skills to navigate complex civil law, common law and Sharia systems. The college's Juris Doctor (JD) programme is the first graduate law degree of its kind offered in the region.
