Another Wolesi Jirga candidate ends up in jail

(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) The appellate court of Kabul has sentenced a Wolesi Jirga candidate, Ghulam Ali Wahdat, to three years in jail over misusing his authority.

Jamshid Rasouli, the Attorney General Office (AGO) spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News that Ghulam Ali Wahdat, a former interior minister, and five other workers of the ministry had been sentenced by the Anti-Corruption Justice Center (ACJC) on September 26.

He said that Wahdat was currently in prison but the court€™s decision was not final and the convict had the right for appeal.

Pajhwok Afghan News contacted a Facebook page supporting Ghulam Ali Wahdat, but no one responded.

According to the Article 39 of the Election Law, only those people, who are not convicted of crimes and not restricted of civil rights by the court, can register as candidate for Wolesi Jirga.

However, Wahdat, as accused of misusing his authority, was added to the list of candidates before his conviction.

The final list of candidates was announced on August 14. Wahat name is still in the list candidates, but the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) had earlier said names of a number of candidates would be removed.

The IECC did not name the candidates and a date for removing them from the list.

According to a report, Abdul Karim Shafaq, another Wolesi Jirga candidate from Farah province, was imprisoned for making a fake identity card of disabled people.

Based on another Pajhwok report, Tamim Nuristani, a Wolesi Jirga candidate, is accused of embezzling salaries, but he is not yet detained. Nuristani, however, rejects allegations against him.
