(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ROME, Sept 22 (KUNA) -- The World Food Program celebrated on Saturday the fourth anniversary of UN's honoring of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah with the title "Humanitarian Leader" and Kuwait as a "Humanitarian Center".
The celebration was held in WFP's headquarters in presence of Kuwaiti Ambassador to Italy Sheikh Ali Al-Khalid Al-Sabah, Kuwait's Permanent Representative to Food and Agriculture Organization Yousef Al-Juhail, and a number of the Program's senior executives.
It addressed Kuwait's pioneering role in Humanitarian action in light of His Highness the Amir's proactive initiatives, immediate response, and generous contributions to aid victims of humanitarian crises, natural disasters, and armed conflicts that have made him worthy of being a "Leader of Humanitarian Action".
The event also pointed out Kuwait's special and traditional interest in backing comprehensive development around the world to improve the living conditions of millions of people who live in marginal areas in some developing countries, and transfer them from living in famine, poverty, and destitution to living decently in peace.
It reiterated WFP's fruitful and effective relationship with Kuwait and its philanthropic organizations, notably the Red Crescent Society, which continue to aid victims of ongoing political conflicts in the region, particularly refugees and children in Syria, Jordan, and Lebanon.
"WFP is so grateful to His Highness the Amir and the Kuwaiti government for their effective investments in WFP's activities and actions," Amir Abdulla, WFP's Deputy Executive Director, stated to KUNA.
Abdulla also expressed his pride in the Kuwaiti people's continued support of humanitarian programs and actions in crises-stricken countries, particularly in areas where emergency operations, such as food relief, take place.
He also commended His Highness the Amir's efforts in granting funds and financing food aid programs to millions of poor people around the world, particularly in Arab and Middle Eastern countries, lauding his leading role in motivating the international community.
The UN official also stressed the importance of His Highness the Amir's humanitarian interest in promoting solidarity and brotherhood among people of the world, pointing out his humanitarian and relief aid delivered via WFP's various operations.
He also highlighted His Highness the Amir and Kuwait's political and diplomatic efforts in encouraging dialogue, resolving conflicts, achieving peace and stability, and backing humanitarian missions to perform their duties and deliver aid to the needy ones.
For his part, Ambassador Sheikh Ali Al-Khalid thanked WFP for taking the interest of joining the Kuwaiti people to celebrate the fourth anniversary of His Highness the Amir's UN honoring, recalling the Program's strong and active support in backing His Highness to receive the UN's honoring.
WFP's highlighting of His Highness the Amir's role in humanitarian actions is a source of pride to all Kuwaitis, and a proof of the international community's appreciation of Kuwait's long-historic efforts in promoting humanitarian solidarity, providing relief aid, and carrying out philanthropic activities, he told KUNA.
His Highness the Amir's pioneering role, which earned him such a high-status title, has boosted Kuwait's international status, especially the country's diplomatic missions around the world and international institutions, the Kuwaiti diplomat said.
He also noted the continued cooperation and wide partnership between his country and WFP, pointing out the Program as one of the most significant UN bodies in receiving Kuwaiti aid and grants for refugees, displaced persons, children, students, and mothers around the world, particularly victims of violence and conflicts.
