Timber worth millions of afghanis seized in Nangarhar
(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Security forces seized timber wood worth millions of afghanis in eastern Nangarhar province during a special operation in Khewa district on Tuesday.
The governor, the police chief and other security officials visited Badyali and Abdulkhe areas of the district where the raids were conducted two days ago.
Governor Hayatullah Hayat said the operation was launched after receiving several complaints through the 160 helpline about illegal trafficking of timber.
He said the operation was launched in cooperation with Afghan security forces in Khewa district two days ago and they seized a truckload of timber and arrested the driver, but the person behind the trafficking was on the run.
He added some timber wood had been skillfully hidden in grasses in a house in Abdulkhel area.
A large amount of timber was found in another house in Badyali area, Hayat said and warned of legal action against anyone involved in illegal smuggling of timber.
Nangarhar police chief Brig. Gen. Ghulam Sanayee Stanikzai said some fundamental steps were being taken to check timber smuggling.
He urged people to report to police about suspicious activities, corruption, illegal trafficking of timer or any other anti-government movements.
Talibjan, a resident of Badyali area, said that insurgents, government officials and powerful figures had been smuggling timber over the past three years.
Lalpacha, another resident, said timber smuggling was an income source for insurgents to meet their operation costs.
