(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): Local officials on Sunday said the Taliban had closed all schools in Charkh district of central Logar province.
Charkh district chief Mohammad Hanif Hanifi told Pajhwok Afghan News that the Taliban closed the schools in reaction to an Afghan forces operation launched in the area.
€œAfter Afghan forces killed Mualvi Mohammad, a Taliban commander, during a raid on Friday night, the Taliban in response shut the district€™s schools,€ he said.
He said they had launched efforts through local tribal elders at resolving the problem.
A tribal elder form Qala-i-Naw area of Charkh district, Sayed Ahmad Agha, said that all schools in the district remained closed since Saturday.
€œTaliban have warned all students and teachers not to go to school, teachers and students fear Taliban€™s wrath and avoid schools,€ he said.
Mohammad Shapoor Arab, Logar education department spokesman, also said that the Taliban ordered shut all schools in Charkh district. €œWe are trying to resolve this problem through negotiations,€ he said.
On the other hand, Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, said they were not involved in closing of Charkh schools.
According to the provincial education department, there are 30 schools in Charkh imparting education to 11,000 students including 2,200 of them girls.
Currently 320 educational centers are active in Logar, attended by 150,000 pupils.
