(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): American and Pakistani leaders have conferred on the need for a negotiated settlement of the conflict in Afghanistan, a media report said on Saturday.
The issue was taken up at an unscheduled meeting between Pakistan Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and US Vice President Michael Pence on Friday.
At Pakistan€™s request, the 30-minute, one-on-one meeting took place at Pence€™s residence at the US Naval Observatory in Washington, Dawn quoted unnamed sources as saying.
Abbasi also had a 40-minute meeting with Congressman Ted Yoho, chairman of the House Committee on Asia and the Pacific, and its ranking Democrat Congressman Brad Sherman.
€œLike Pence, the US lawmakers also focused on the current situation in Afghanistan but they expressed their concern about China€™s growing influence in Pakistan,€ the newspaper said.
The prime minister reiterated Pakistan€™s €œsincere commitment€ to efforts for peace in Afghanistan and also underlined the sacrifices his country has rendered in the war on terrorism.
€œThe prime minister assured the US leader that no other state wants peace in Afghanistan more than Pakistan does, as it will be a direct beneficiary of this peace,€ one source told the daily.
