(MENAFN- Tribal News Network) PESHAWAR: The treatment of Afghan refugee Tuberculosis (TB) patients in Peshawar has been linked to the guarantee by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to a report in a newspaper, this condition has been imposed after a lot of Afghan refugees left their treatment midway due to which their disease deteriorated and became incurable. An official of the TB Control Programme said the UNHCR officials have been informed in this regard.
The report said the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is providing free of cost treatment to TB patients and this facility is also provided free of cost to the Afghan refugees. He said many refugees leave the treatment midway due to which it converts into multi-drug resistant (MDR) disease which is very difficult to cure and very expensive as well.
The UNHCR officials have requested the KP TB Control Programme officials to provide treatment facility to the MDR refugee patients as well. However, the UNHCR has been asked to provide guarantee in this regard as this disease requires two years consecutive treatment.
