Doha: Qatar Red Crescent (QRC), through its representative mission in Afghanistan, has begun the winter relief programme 2017-2018 by distributing winter aid to displaced families in the most difficult-to-reach states, with a total budget of $160,000 (QR 584,000).
QRC said in a press statement on Saturday that the project aims to alleviate the suffering of the poor, the needy and the displaced in the cold winter and reduce the spread of malnutrition, noting that the number of beneficiaries is 1,500 families with about 7,500 people in Kunar, Baghlan and Daykundi states, with 500 families per state, mostly displaced.
The agreement, in coordination with the Afghan Red Crescent, was signed between the two parties in October, while coordination is being carried out with the local authorities in the target states to follow up all stages of the project and attend distributions.
Acting Governor of Kunar Fareedallah Hassan thanked the Qatar Red Crescent for its assistance and expressed his hope for further support in other developmental aspects, especially health, water, sanitation and income-generating activities for poor and displaced families.
The director of the eastern Afghanistan region of the Afghan Red Crescent Haji Mohammed Iqbal said that the assistance provided to beneficiaries of needy families is the result of constructive cooperation between the Qatari Red Crescent and the Afghan Red Crescent. He pointed out that he had previously implemented projects in eastern Afghanistan by establishing seasonal and multisectoral projects.
