(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has added 10 more intercity buses to its fleet. The Dh10-million worth new buses will see an increase in the frequency of intercity services and thereby reduce the waiting time of over 20,000 passengers who use the bus service on a daily basis. With the recent addition, RTA Sharjah will have a total of 112 intercity buses.
According to Abdulaziz Al Jarwan, director for transport affairs at the RTA, all the new buses will depart to different destinations from Al Jubail bus station.
"The new spacious buses will give a boost to the public shuttle service we provide and will help us reduce the waiting time for intercity routes," Al Jarwan said.
"They are all air-conditioned with comfortable seats, advanced alarm system and LCD screens to display the trip data."
The RTA Sharjah, with the pressing demand on public transport, spares no effort to develop its bus fleet, improve its service and increase the number of routes and buses, Al Jarwan said.
"Our 112 intercity public buses, which run on 16 routes, cover 56,000km every day.
"The new 10 buses are an addition to the earlier introduced 37 new buses that joined the RTA Sharjah public bus fleet on intercity routes,."
Yusuf Sulaiman Al Hammadi, head of the procurement and administrative services who also chairs the bus examination committee, said all the buses are fitted with four internal and external CCTV cameras and a special camera for alerting the bus driver while reversing or driving ahead.
"The new buses are also equipped with quality sensors to avoid any unexpected closure of the doors besides having spacious lockers."
Apart form this, they are equipped with an emergency stop system, which reduces accident and frontal impact. "They are also fitted with a special warning system to alert drivers while changing lanes or when repeatedly going off the track," he added.
"Every seat is fitted with a special reading light, and a volume control system similar to that of aircraft, electrical outlets for charging computers and smart phones, and smoke detectors for maximum protection."
