LA native life changed after attending Wheelchair Wash Festival

Long Beach CA / Jose Carrasco was a recent graduate from Garfield High School and was excited to be working as a mechanic apprentice. One evening while he was walking back home he was shot seven times from behind and left for dead. To this day he has no idea who shot him and why.  Jose recalls being bullied in school because he was sent to the Special Education classes because he spoke more Spanish than English and had difficulty with understanding his class assignments.  Jose was discharged from the hospital a paraplegic in a wheelchair and began to question his life purpose after this random act of violence.  Jose attend a wheelchair wash festival hosted by LA non- profit Familia Unida five years ago. His life perspective changed the moment he rolled through the red carpet and experienced a day of Free Pampering and interaction with others in wheelchairs like himself.

He merged his skill of mechanic training and his new knowledge of using a wheelchair and begin a service to fix and tune up wheelchairs.  He drives all over Los Angeles county repairing wheelchairs his van loaded with inventions he has made that are a perfect fit to bring new life to an old wheelchair.

Jose reflects “My dream was to work on cars now I know my purpose is to bring life to wheelchairs.”

Sunday July 26 at the Familia Unida Wheelchair Wash Festival Jose will be donating his services to repair and tune up wheelchairs after attendees receive a wash and wax.  Jose recently shared “Familia Unida saved my life - I know that I can choose happiness”.  Jose will be rolling in the red carpet with his girlfriend who will also be rolling in right next to him.

Familia Unida Living with MS will host the 12th Annual Wheelchair Wash a one-day celebration that is remembered all year long “no color lines except for the red carpet line” on Sunday July 26th from 10AM to 6PM at the East Los Angeles Civic Center 4801 East Third Street. Angelinos will be treated to a fun day where they receive a free - wheelchair wash wax tune up lunch community resources and enjoy live entertainment. Special entertainment is provided by those also living with a disability sharing their talents through dance and song. “ I have been a supporter of Familia Unida and the Wheelchair Wash Concept created by Irma Resendez since the inception.
