QU 11th in Quacquarelli Symonds Arab Region University Rankings

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Qatar University (QU) has been ranked 11th in Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Arab Region University Rankings 2015 among 100 top universities in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region and Asia.

This was announced at a ceremony in Dubai, organised by QS in partnership with UAE University and sponsored by International English Language Testing System.

For the 2015 edition, 259 universities in the three regions were evaluated.

King Fadad University of Petroleum and Minerals was ranked first, American University of Beirut second and King Saud Universe third.

Prof Sheikha Abdulla Al Misnad, President, QF, said, "Being selected among the top universities in the region is a milestone for QU at a time when the institution is becoming a leader in academic excellence and is the fastest-growing university for research in the region. "It also highlights QU's vision to become a model national university in the region recognised for high-quality education and social and economic development.

"It also shows QU's contribution to Qatar's ambitions towards a knowledge-based economy, and providing the local and international labour market with distinguished graduates who will contribute to further national growth and progress."

Mandy Mok, CEO, QS Asia Quacquarelli Symonds, said, "The Arab Rankings provide a transparent overview of where a university stands in relation to its peers. A ranking is not perfect, but is part of a global process to hold higher educational institutions accountable to stakeholders they serve, including governments, academic peers and students.

"The competition rankings induce creates pressure to innovate, perform better, reward excellence and encourage progress. In this way the rankings contribute to the transformation of higher education in the Middle East."

Rankings for the Arab region differ from global rankings. They are developed to reflect specific challenges and priorities for institutions in the region and include nine criteria: academic reputation (30 percent), employer reputation (20), faculty-student ratio (20), Web impact (10), proportion of international faculty (2.5), proportion of international students (2.5), proportion of staff with PhD (5), citations per paper from Scopus (5), and papers per faculty from Scopus (5 percent).
