Qatar- QRC opens sheltering centre in northern Gaza

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Qatar Red Crescent (QRC), the Palestinian Ministry of Public Works and Housing and Beit Hanoun Municipality have celebrated the delivery of the first sheltering centre in Beit Hanoun, northern Gaza.

The centre has 27 temporary housing units and was provided as part of a fundraiser by the Maldivian people for Gaza following the Israeli war last summer.

Dr Akram Nassar, Director, QRC Office, Gaza, told the opening ceremony that inspired by its theme 'Saving Lives, Preserving Dignity' QRC implemented the urgent intervention in solidarity with the Palestinian people in Gaza, particularly Beit Hanoun, which was badly damaged by the attacks.

"Another 73-unit centre is under way as part an initiative by the Maldivian people to help Gaza.

"It also involves rehabilitating water and sewerage services in Gaza and Jabalia by procuring fittings and maintenance tools for pumps and generators and rehabilitating and digging water wells at a cost of nearly $1.5m," he added.

Imad Hamada, General Director, Bureau of the Minister of Public Works and Housing, expressed happiness over the completion of housing units which will help Beit Hanoun's community survive the tragic conditions of destroyed residential areas.

He called for more facilities to bring building materials in to rebuild demolished homes, praising the Maldivian people's contribution.

On behalf of the municipality and Beit Hanoun Community Support Popular Committee, Dr Mohamed Nazek Al Kafarna, Mayor, said, "We feel proud today for delivering the centre by virtue of QRC and the Maldivian people's initiative for Gaza.

"It will help displaced people until their homes are renovated."

The ceremony was attended by many beneficiary families.

Guests also saw work on the second centre.

On the work done under the Maldivian people's campaign, QRC's Gaza site engineer, Raed Alian, said QRC teams built and equipped five water wells at the sheltering centres of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East in Gaza and Beit Hanoun. These wells will cater for six centres and schools, serving 5,000 people.

He said the Maldivian people's campaign involved the supply of water and sewerage spare parts and generators for Gaza and Jabalia municipalities at a cost of $415,000 to offer better services.

Soon a $450,000 medicine shipment under the Maldivian people's campaign will arrive from Jordan for distribution to Gaza hospitals to partly meet the needs of patients.
