Why CPSC Petitions for a Tougher Voluntary Standards on Toddlers Safety in Window Treatments

Following the deaths of eight children from getting strangled on corded window blinds and the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announcement on massive voluntary recall of shades and roll-up blinds; the reselling of recalled consumer product is not allowed and is illegal. Consumers were advised to stop using such products immediately. Yet when the voluntary standards failed to protect young children the CPSC has now petitioned for a stronger standard.

Roman shades and roll-up blinds are among the recalled products in the previous years. These window treatments have looped pull cord and have exposed inner cords on the back while roll-up blinds have looped pull cord and two lifting cord loops that runs around the bottom rail and it’s exposed lifting loops. Though there’s no incident or injuries identified with the use of Roman shades and roll-up blinds the CPSC took the initiative to recall the products after the death of a child entangled in a lifting cord of roll-up style blinds.

With the dangers of this recalled consumer products can bring to children the CPSC pushed for a regulation in association to the safety of cords that is connected to  window coverings like blinds and shades since the voluntary standards is not enough to prevent annual deaths of children under 5 years old. Window covering products like horizontal and vertical blinds and pleated shades with continuous loop cords are also included in the list that have a serious risk of child strangulation.

According to the spokesperson for CPSC Scott Wilson the status on the issue has been broken now that CPSC is working on a tougher voluntary standard environments by sending out letters to various industries to express the concerns why the voluntary standards failed to save enough lives and the very reason for the federal rulemaking to exist; in which the agency is seeking comment on this issue from the public and stakeholders for the next 2 months.

With much emphasis on the hazards of corded window blinds the public has turned their attention on window treatments that are motorized. Over the years this energy saving window blinds are proven to be safe since these have a cord lifting system with retractable pull cord with a constant length that allows homeowners to raise and lower the shade effortlessly. While other variants of this energy saving window with a cordless pushup and pull down system are suitable as bathroom blinds and kitchen window covering that allows complete control of the amount of light entering the house.

Granted that there are other ways to improve the homes with motorized window treatments consumers should be aware of the products they are purchasing. Ensuring the safety and the quality of the window blinds and shades should be the number one priority that consumers should consider.
