With Eid holidays over sweet sales slump
(MENAFN- Arab News) A number of employees at sweet shops in Jeddah confirmed a noticeable decline in sales since the end of Ramadan and Eid.
The busy Ramadan and Eid season has 'drained their energy' due to high sales and efforts to achieve high profit margins some of them told Arab News.
Many expected the market to resume activity soon especially during the weekends when market activity tends to increase.
Ezziddine Ahmed who works at one of the popular sweets shops in Jeddah said the dessert market is currently experiencing a decline in sales of more than 50 percent since the end of the Ramadan and Eid seasons during which companies sell the largest volume of dessert products as compared to the rest of the year.
He said about 80 percent of annual sales takes place during this time but expected the market activity to increase once again in the weeks ahead.
Regarding the types of desserts that are of highest demand during holidays fellow sweets shop employee Ahmed Yousef said all types of chocolates cakes and French pastries are extremely popular as many like to enjoy these delicacies with Arabic coffee. He said Middle Eastern sweets such as kunafa is also popular and consumed the most during the month of Ramadan.
Meanwhile prices of desserts have been increasing according to store manager Mohanned Al-Arnabout. 'The prices increased over the past two years by 15 to 20 percent. The price of ma'moul increased from SR40 to SR50 per kilo while that of baklava increased from SR60 to SR70 per kilo.'
