(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Sohar Refinery activated its flaring system to burn off escaping flammable hydrocarbon gases on Tuesday after suffering a 'severe electrical power interruption', according to a press release.
The Orpic release said that the incident began at 11.50am at its Sohar refinery, with the flaring system utilised 'immediately after the power failure' to its full capacity and continued at reduced levels for the next 30 minutes. The systems were stabilised and power supply restored by 1pm, although there was the potential for further 'flaring' incidents over the next 48 hours.
'The main refining process unit of the refinery was restarted at 2.50pm. The restart involved a further short duration of heavy flaring, which has now been reduced to more normal levels. Flaring devices are designed to cope with the full output in cases of emergency shutdown'.
'Over the next 36 to 48 hours, all remaining process units will be restarted and brought back to normal operation. During this time there may be some occasional and brief flaring events, at relatively minor levels,' added the statement.
Refineries worldwide utilise 'flare stacks' to burn off flammable gas released by pressure relief valves during plant start-ups and partial shutdowns, though only for short periods.
