Jordan- Crown Prince inaugurates Shaumari Wildlife Reserve's visitor center

Azraq, June 26 (Petra) -- His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II, the Regent, on Tuesday, inaugurated the Shaumari Wildlife Reserve's visitor center in the Al Azraq town, east of Amman.

The Shaumari Wildlife Reserve is a home to a group of rare and endangered animals in the Middle East.

Prince Al Hussein toured the center, which was established under a royal initiative, and was briefed on wildlife present in the reserve.

During the tour, the Regent examined exhibits of wildlife remains, archeological pieces that highlight the history of the place, which students of schools, universities and researchers benefit from. He also checked on methods used in dealing with animals living in the region.

Establishing the visitor center aims at developing a new tourist product in the region and create jobs.

On a safari tour in the Shaumari Wildlife Reserve, which has an area of about 22 square kilometers, His Royal Highness learned about the mechanism of tracking animals and reading their natural paths, and administrative procedures applied for improving wildlife infrastructure.

Prince Al Hussein expressed his admiration for the level of services provided by the Shaumari Wildlife Reserve and its visitor center, which turned it into a tourist attraction in the Kingdom.

The Shaumari Wildlife Reserve is about 120 kilometers east of Amman, an was established in 1975 with the support of the RSPN and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), to be Jordan's first natural reserve that includes a visitor center, a restaurant and a hiking area equipped with facilities, games and umbrellas.

RSPN President Khalid Al-Irani told Petra that the society manages about nine nature reserves that represent the most important natural habitat and natural beauty in the Kingdom.

He said RSPN intends to establish two new reserves in Jordan's eastern desert, which contributes to creating many job opportunities as these nature reserves constitute important economic hubs.
