Russian Military Plane Crashes in Mediterranean

(MENAFN- Morocco World News) Russian Military Plane Crashes in Mediterranean Rabat – A Russian fighter jet crash-landed in the Mediterranean shortly after taking off from Hmeimim airbase, located in Syria. The crash resulted in the death of both pilots, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced Thursday.

According to American newsource CNN, the cause of the crash might have been a bird flying into the engine.

The incident was preceded by a crash that occurred last March and claimed the lives of 32 people on board. Yet another accident occurred last February, when a Russian Sukhoi-25 ground attack aircraft was shot down in a rebel-held area in Syria's northwestern province, Idlib.

Back in October 2017, a Su-24 bomber crashed during takeoff from Hmeimim, killing both pilots.

In December 2016, a plane carrying Russian military personnel to Syria crashed in the Black Sea. All 92 passengers on board perished.

Since Russia launched its military operations to fight ISIS in Syria back in September 2015, the number of its aircraft accidents has increased.
