(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A true example of how leadership and learning should go hand in hand was demonstrated by the students of the Dubai International Academy (DIA) at the school's 10th Model United Nations conference to discuss some of the most pressing global issues today, including war, poverty and over-dependence on black oil. An interesting mix of ideas and solutions were discussed by the empowered student delegates as they heard, spoke and understood global issues.
The theme for the decennial conference is 'Global Innovation in Education, Energy and the Economy', which aimed at encouraging attendees at Dubai International Academy's Model United Nations (DIAMUN) 2018 to think about how education and energy play a crucial role in strengthening global economies.
Renewable energy, how to keep global nuclear power safe, women rights, development of future resources were some of the critical issues that the student delegates discussed at the four-day conference that ended on Saturday.
Over a period of four days, 16 committees were formed to offer participating members the opportunity to attend a real-life simulation of a United Nations Conference. Each delegate was assigned a country to represent and presented with topics and current events.
"It is important that we students have dialogue and discuss these issues in order to get prepared to deal with them in future. In a few years when we are the generation that takes over, we will need to be aware of these issues and be able to take the right decisions and effective measure to ensure the problem is solved. Small solutions can lead to solutions to big problems.
Talking about his project on solar energy for the community, Ayush Walia, executive president of DIAMUN 2018, said: "I made an interactive video for UAE residents to see and implement solar lanterns within their houses and use solar energy to reduce their electricity bills and move towards a sustainable future. To benefit the needy people with this project I will now be heading to some villages in India where I will give out these solar lanterns especially to students who do not have access to electricity which at times hinders their access to education. I managed to plan this only after being part of these DIAMUN conferences where I have learnt to make changes in the real world."

The previous conference, DIAMUN 2017, hosted a record number of over 900 delegates and directors from over 52 schools.
