Putin calls for silencing the guns on Damascus outskirts

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) MOSCOW, Feb 28 (KUNA) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday urged other stakeholders in the Syrian crisis to cooperate for muzzling the guns in East Ghouta, on Damascus's outskirts.

Speaking after a meeting with the visiting Austrian chancellor, Putin said "we should all act together to tackle the situation in East Ghouta.

"Nothing much can be attained if each party seeks to accomplish short-lived tactics." Interfax news agency quoted Putin as warning that Moscow would not be idle if the bombardment "carried out by the terrorists in East Ghouta continues.

"They have been bombarding continuously and in some days they fire up to 80 shells and projectiles and in other times some of the shells hit the Russian embassy and the trade attache and we won't be patient regarding this situation." He described conditions in Syria as complicated and expressed his belief that reaching a settlement hinges on the warring parties and their desire to accomplish such a goal.

Putin pledged to help the Syrian parties to cooperate and pave the way for a settlement.

His words came against the background of a latest resolution by the Security Council on ceasing fighting in Syria, namely in East Ghouta, to enable delivery of humanitarian supplies to the besieged and stranded civilians. (end) as.rk
