25 Feb 2018

Manchester United vs Chelsea lived up to its billing as the Red Devils finally got the better of their opponents.

Goals from Romelu Lukaku and Jesse Lingard sealed the 2-1 victory for the hosts.

Willian was the lone scorer for the Blues but Chelsea were unfortunate not to draw level after a controversial decision went against them.

Here's our match report.

Chelsea could have gone ahead in the 4th minute
Unlucky

The game got off to a lively start with Chelsea getting onto the front foot early.

In the fourth minute, the Blues from London came close to scoring when Alvaro Morata's effort rattled the crossbar before Hazard's follow up was tipped over by David de Gea.

Chelsea piled on the pressure and it didn't take them long to find an opening.

In the 32nd minute, Willian sent the away fans into a frenzy when he found the back of the net to put the visitors ahead.

It was a brilliant play from the Brazilian to find Hazard on the counter before receiving a sumptuous pass from the Belgian to only drill it past David de Gea's near post.

Ouch!

Manchester United responded strongly with Romelu Lukaku drawing the hosts level with a close-range effort in the 39th minute.

The Belgian latched onto a pass from Anthony Martial and slipped it past Courtois, from eight yards out.

At the halftime whistle, both teams were level with all to do in the second half.

The visitors were clearly the better side in the first half.

Lingard's strike gives Mourinho a sweet victory
Cloud Nine

But a fixture of this intensity had to have a winner and that came in the form of super substitute Jesse Lingard.

In the 75th minute, Romelu Lukaku chipped in a cross which was met by a leaping Lingard, who flash a header past Courtois.

Old Trafford broke into a wild frenzy as they finally got the better of Chelsea.

Morata's strike could have been the difference
Controversial

But can Manchester United vs Chelsea end without a controversy?

In the 86th minute of the tightly contested fixture, Fabregas chipped the ball which was seized by Morata and drilled past David de Gea.

However, the goal was ruled offside, which meant Lingard's goal was still the difference between the two sides.

Replays later showed Morata was onside and that was a tight call.
