(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) New York, Dec.4 (Petra)-- The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres late Sunday expressed deep concern about the sharp escalation of armed clashes and airstrikes in Yemen's capital, Sana'a, and other parts of the war-torn country over the past several days.
A statement by Guterres said "the fighting has already resulted in dozens of deaths and hundreds of injuries, including civilians, and is also restricting the movement of people and life-saving services within Sana'a city.
"Ambulances and medical teams cannot access the injured and people cannot go outside to buy food and other necessities. Aid workers are unable to travel and implement critical life-saving programs at a time when millions of Yemenis rely on assistance to survive," according to the statement.
The UN official has called on the parties to the conflict in Yemen to cease all air and ground assaults.
The latest outbreak of violence could not come at a worse time for the Yemeni people, who are already caught up in the world's largest humanitarian crisis, he said, adding that the conflict and blockade have caused significant shortages of critical supplies, especially food and fuel, and resulted in price hikes, curtailing access to food, safe water and healthcare.
The Secretary-General reiterated that there is no military solution to the Yemen conflict, urging all parties to engage meaningfully with the UN to revitalize inclusive negotiations on a political settlement.
Meanwhile, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has also expressed its support for the uprising of the Yemen people and all that is in their interest and the achievement of their aspirations for unity, territorial integrity, stability and security.
In a statement, the OIC welcomed the call for dialogue among the parties concerned with resolving the crisis in Yemen. It reiterated its steadfast position of support for the legitimate authority and for a resolution of the crisis through the Gulf initiative, its executive mechanisms and the outcomes of the comprehensive national dialogue in Yemen as well as the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, in particular Resolution 2216.
The OIC expressed hope that Yemen will overcome the crisis through and return to playing its vital role, completely divorced from any sectarian agenda and in the interests of the region and the whole Islamic nation.
