Justice Department: appointing CFPB acting director is within Trump authority
(MENAFN) A memory had been issued on Saturday by the Justice Department suggesting that President Trump possesses the power to appoint White House budget chief Mick Mulvaney as the new acting director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).
The assistant attorney general for the Office of Legal Counsel Steven Engel confirmed in the memo that despite the established line of succession of the CFPB, the president has full authority to appoint an acting director to the watchdog agency according to the 1998 Federal Vacancies Act.
In the memo, Engel wrote "the fact that the Deputy Director may serve as Acting Director by operation of the statute, however, does not displace the President's authority under the Vacancies Reform Act."
