The Summit and the Jordanian AgendaBy Fahed Khitan

As usual, Arab Summits are preceded by endless and more or less needless ceremonial formalities which make them seem a bigger deal than they usually are.

The Amman 2017 Dead Sea Summit is an ordinary summit, and Jordan was only chosen to host it because the capitals which are supposed to are sunk in blood.

Meanwhile, despite being in the middle of a raging fire, Jordan remains one of the few safe Arab countries, where leaders can rest assured of their wellbeing.

Naturally, miracles are not expected. Not once has any of the 27 Arab Summits, so far, changed anything for us. To the average Arab citizen, the Arab League's summits are of no significance whatsoever. More so today, with some major Arab states completely deteriorated, others incapacitated, it is hard to imagine any positive outcome, to be honest.

We in Jordan know all that for a fact, but it doesn't change a thing when it comes to doing what's right. Rejecting the League's request to host the Summit was out of the question. Especially under such exceptionally challenging circumstance. Jordan has not the luxury of evading responsibility.

Despite dim expectations, Jordan sees in the Amman Summit an opportunity articulate and reinforce the highlights and basics of Jordan's political and diplomatic discourse.

This is particularly important in a time of vast confliction and mixed up priorities which come at the expense of the Arab Nation's highest interests.

Usually, host countries play a primary role in the Summits' preparatory agenda and the formulation of their results.

For Jordan, the Palestinian cause presides the ladder of Jordanian priorities, and hence the Summit's.

In short, it is the highlight of Jordan's agenda, and no other cause will surpass it.

Accordingly, Jordan's views on the matter are as clear as the bulletin itself; the two-state solution must be sustained and the establishment of the independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borderline, with Jerusalem as its capital.

That said, an Arab Initiative could advance the efforts for peace in accordance to the UN's resolutions, without any amendments.

Second on Jordan's agenda, and subsequently the Summit's, is the Syrian crisis, which will be approached on a bi-axonal basis; a political resolution to advance via the Geneva mechanism and the UN, ensuring the unity of Syria and the Syrian people, alongside a military solution to address terrorism and end their threat once and for all.

The war against terror is an important issue for Jordan. Hence, the Summit is expected to address it with equal determination and resolve, given the threats terrorism and extremism pose to all Arab states, as well as the rest of the world.

The outcomes of the Summit on these cases, among others, will not be without value or meaning in this particular stage, as we fend against international and regional forces desperate to split us up and share geo-political influence over the Arab region.

As leader of the Summit's council this yeat, Jordan will address these decisions as messages, conveyable and communicable to the power halls of the world, who must reconsider any plans they have regarding our region's future.

In the meantime, Washington under Trump is still working out an outlook for the Middle East and its fate, whereas Russia seeks to reconstruct new understandings with the west.

Regionally, Iran and Turkey are on the front-line centre of the Arab field, with Israel waiting on the opportunity to present itself, to spread more havoc across the Arab World.

That said, Arabs need now, more than ever, to unite and make a consolidated statement, even while at their worst state, a unified position must be taken.
