US Navy pulls protesting nurse from Guantanamo

(MENAFN- Arab News) MIAMI: Military officials say a Navy nurse who refused to take part in feeding of hunger striking prisoners at Guantanamo has been recalled early from duty at the US base in Cuba.

The unidentified nurse was sent back to his parent command at the Naval Health Clinic New England. His commanding officer in New England says an investigation has been conducted into his conduct at Guantanamo. Navy Capt. Maureen Pennington said Tuesday the investigation is under review and no decision has been made about any discipline.

Lawyers for prisoners have praised the nurse for refusing to take part in what they say is an unnecessarily harsh way of force-feeding men who are protesting their confinement.

The US says no other members of the medical staff have refused to do the procedure.
