(MENAFN) A train accident in Egypt's Giza province left 60 people injured on Sunday, according to an initial casualty count reported by local media.

The derailment occurred near Gerza village in the Al-Ayyat district, prompting an emergency response from medical and rescue services.

Ambulance teams were immediately deployed to the location and transported the injured to nearby hospitals to receive medical attention, according to reports.

Meanwhile, Egypt's railway authority sent specialized technical and maintenance crews to the accident site to examine the damage, remove the derailed train wreckage and work toward restoring railway operations, which experienced significant disruptions following the incident.

Security agencies have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the derailment and establish its cause, according to reports.
