Thailand’s Ex-PM Gets Royal Pardon, Leaves Prison

(MENAFN) Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has been freed from the remainder of his prison term after receiving a royal pardon, according to reports citing comments from Justice Minister Lt. Gen. Ruttapol Naowarat.

Thaksin was originally scheduled to complete his sentence on Sept. 9 and had been serving the final stage of the term while under parole supervision.

According to reports, provisions included in the 2026 Royal Decree on Royal Pardons allow parolees with less than one year left on their sentences to qualify for release, provided they do not fall under specified exclusion categories.

Officials said the pardon allows for the immediate removal of Thaksin’s electronic monitoring device. However, reports noted that local administrative bodies must still finalize the necessary procedures to formally implement the decree.

The move effectively removes the remaining legal restrictions linked to Thaksin’s sentence following his return to Thailand in August 2023 after spending years abroad in self-imposed exile.

According to reports, the pardon marks the conclusion of a legal process that followed his homecoming and subsequent imprisonment after more than a decade outside the country.
