New Jersey Police Detain Protesters Following Immigration Center Curfew
(MENAFN) Police in the United States arrested several people on Sunday night outside the Delaney Hall immigration detention center in Newark, New Jersey, after authorities imposed an emergency curfew following clashes between protesters and law enforcement.
According to reports, the curfew covered a half-mile radius around the facility and came into effect at 9 p.m. after demonstrators reportedly advanced toward a law enforcement perimeter, damaged barriers, threw objects at officers, and set a street fire, New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport said.
Davenport stated that many protesters left the area after repeated warnings, but a smaller group who allegedly arrived equipped with helmets, shields, and gas masks refused to disperse and were detained by police.
“Their actions put the public at risk,” she said, while also praising law enforcement for efforts to de-escalate the situation.
According to reports, she noted that most demonstrators had been peaceful and said they were highlighting concerns about conditions at the Delaney Hall facility, while reaffirming the state’s support for the right to peaceful protest alongside public safety measures.
The unrest followed nearly a week of ongoing demonstrations at the privately run detention center.
