Jazeera Airways has launched its first direct service between Kuwait and Italy, operating an inaugural flight from Kuwait International Airport's Terminal 5 to Milan Bergamo Airport on Friday as the carrier pushes deeper into the European leisure and business travel market.

The new Kuwait–Milan Bergamo route will operate three times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, using Airbus A320neo aircraft. The service gives Kuwait-based travellers a direct low-cost connection to northern Italy and provides Milan Bergamo with a new Gulf link at a time when regional carriers are rebuilding schedules after months of disruption across Middle East airspace.

The first outbound flight was seen off in Kuwait by Lorenzo Morini, Italy's ambassador to Kuwait, while Milan Bergamo Airport marked the arrival with a reception attended by Kuwait's ambassador to Italy, Nasser Alqahtani, Kuwait's consul general in Milan, Mohammed Khaled Al-Ajran, Jazeera Airways chief executive Barathan Pasupathi, chief commercial officer Paul Carroll, and senior executives from SACBO, the airport operator.

Morini described the service as a new bridge between Kuwait and Italy, saying it would support stronger economic, cultural and people-to-people ties. Alqahtani said the route represented a step in strengthening relations between Kuwait and the Italian Republic, while praising the airport authorities and Jazeera Airways' management for expanding direct connectivity.

Pasupathi framed Milan Bergamo as more than a new destination, calling it a gateway for Jazeera's wider European expansion. The airline has indicated that Bergamo will form part of a broader network strategy focused on value, convenience and onward connectivity, with further European destinations expected to follow.

Milan Bergamo, also known as Il Caravaggio International Airport, is one of Italy's busiest gateways and serves the wider Milan metropolitan region from Orio al Serio, about 45 kilometres north-east of Milan and close to the city of Bergamo. The airport handled 16,937,976 passengers in 2025 and remains firmly placed among Italy's leading airports, behind Rome Fiumicino and Milan Malpensa.

For Jazeera Airways, the route adds a European point with strong leisure appeal and commercial potential. Northern Italy offers access to Milan's fashion, finance and design sectors, Bergamo's historic centre, the Italian lakes, alpine destinations and wider rail connections across Lombardy. The schedule is also likely to appeal to visiting friends and relatives traffic, short-break travellers and small-business passengers seeking direct access without transiting through larger hubs.

The service arrives as Kuwait's aviation sector works to restore momentum after temporary closures and flight suspensions linked to regional instability earlier this year. Jazeera's operations from Terminal 5 have gradually resumed across key markets, while the airline has continued to position itself as Kuwait's leading low-cost carrier with a network spanning the Middle East, South Asia, Central Asia and Europe.

The company's first-quarter performance reflected the strain on operations, with operating revenue falling to KD45.1 million as airport closures and flight suspensions hit capacity. The launch of the Milan Bergamo service therefore carries commercial significance beyond route expansion, offering a visible sign of network restoration and a test of demand for direct Gulf-to-Europe low-cost travel.

Jazeera's fleet strategy is central to that push. The airline operates Airbus A320-family aircraft and has been preparing for further aircraft deliveries to support medium-term growth. The A320neo used on the Bergamo route gives the airline a more fuel-efficient platform for flights of this length, allowing it to serve thin or developing routes with lower operating costs than wide-body aircraft.

Milan Bergamo also gains from the service. The airport has built much of its growth around low-cost and point-to-point travel, with a catchment area extending across one of Europe's wealthiest industrial regions. Its network includes more than 100 direct destinations, and the addition of Kuwait strengthens its eastbound offering, complementing established links across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.

Competition on Gulf-Europe routes remains intense. Larger network airlines continue to dominate long-haul flows through major hubs, while low-cost carriers are targeting secondary airports and underserved city pairs. Jazeera's move reflects a broader trend among regional carriers seeking routes that combine tourism, diaspora demand and manageable aircraft utilisation, rather than relying solely on high-density trunk markets.
