Three American Universities Add Doha Historical Dictionary To Their Digital Libraries

Doha, Qatar: Three US universities - the University of Michigan, the University of Washington, and Georgetown University in Qatar - have added the Doha Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language to their digital libraries, reflecting the growing interest in the dictionary within Western academic circles.

In a statement released today, the Doha Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language noted that the University of Michigan is the most prominent of the three universities to have recently added the dictionary to its libraries, given its ranking of 45th globally in the prestigious QS World University Rankings and 23rd in the rigorous THE World University Rankings.

The University of Washington follows, ranking 81st in the QS rankings and 25th in the rankings. The third university is Georgetown University in Qatar, whose parent university is ranked among the top 250 universities worldwide.

Executive Director of the Doha Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language, Dr. Mohammed Al Obaidi affirmed that the growing presence of the Doha Historical Dictionary in international university libraries is a recognition of its value and the importance of making it available to researchers in the Arabic language, culture, and civilization.

He added that it reflects the ability of Arab academic institutions to produce knowledge projects of international standards, contributing to strengthening the position of the Arabic language in international scientific research and opening broader horizons for academic and intellectual collaboration.

He stated: "We are confident that Arab universities concerned with the Arabic language are eager to offer the Doha Historical Dictionary to their students and researchers, and we are in contact with a number of them to collaborate and partner in this field."

The Doha Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language is one of the largest projects of the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies.

It was officially launched on May 25, 2013, and work on its development continued for more than 12 years.

It was announced as completed on December 22, 2025. More than 500 researchers from all over the Arab world participated in its development.

The dictionary is in a state of constant development due to its historical nature and its constant interaction with the living language, and because it opens the door for the public to submit comments, corrections, and suggestions.
