Kremlin Envoy Warns Europe of Looming Energy Crisis
(MENAFN) According to reports, Kirill Dmitriev warned that European Union countries and the United Kingdom could soon face what he described as an “energy crisis tsunami” as regional instability continues to affect global fuel supplies.
The comments came amid continued market disruptions linked to the US-Israeli conflict involving Iran, which has contributed to rising oil and gas prices worldwide.
According to reports, global crude prices have climbed sharply since the conflict escalated earlier this year, while retail fuel and wholesale natural gas costs have also surged. The situation has added pressure on European economies that had already significantly reduced dependence on Russian energy imports following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022.
Dmitriev made the remarks while responding on social media to discussions surrounding political changes in Germany, where recent polling reportedly showed growing support for the Alternative for Germany party.
“More to come as the energy crisis tsunami hits the EU/UK imminently,” Dmitriev stated.
According to reports, traditional political parties across Europe have continued losing support to right-wing and center-right political movements in several countries.
The energy pressures linked to the Iran conflict have reportedly pushed the United Kingdom to temporarily permit imports of Russian-origin diesel and jet fuel in an effort to stabilize markets affected by disruptions in shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a route responsible for transporting a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies.
Reports also indicated that the United States recently extended a sanctions waiver allowing limited purchases of Russian seaborne oil.
Several European officials have reportedly argued in favor of restoring some level of energy cooperation with Russia to ease the crisis. However, the European Commission has maintained that the bloc will continue pursuing a complete phase-out of Russian fossil fuel imports by 2027.
Earlier this year, Dmitriev reportedly stated that the EU would “inevitably beg” for Russian gas as energy costs continue rising, while also claiming that Europe is no longer Moscow’s primary energy market as Russia expands partnerships with other countries.
