Türkiye opens railway to Armenia

(MENAFN) Türkiye’s special envoy for the normalization process with Armenia announced on Sunday that the activation of the Akhalkalaki-Kars railway line for Armenia’s imports and exports represents a fresh advancement in commercial relations between the two neighboring states.

Serdar Kilic, Türkiye’s appointed representative for the normalization efforts with Armenia, shared his remarks on the US-based social media platform X, highlighting Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s earlier statement confirming that the railway line had been opened to Armenia’s international trade.

Kilic emphasized that this progress signifies a new stage in direct commerce within the framework of the Türkiye-Armenia normalization initiative. He stated, “I hope this new step, which will also improve quadruple cooperation among Türkiye, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia and make a significant contribution to regional peace and stability, will be beneficial for all these countries.”

The Armenian leader characterized the move as a crucial development for Armenia’s economy, expressing gratitude to partners in Türkiye and Georgia for their collaboration.

Pashinyan further noted that Armenia now enjoys railway connectivity to Russia via Georgia and Azerbaijan, and to China through Russia and Kazakhstan. He explained that the railway corridor passing through Türkiye and Georgia would reinforce Armenia’s ties with the European Union, while additional rail connections with Türkiye, Azerbaijan, and Iran are anticipated in the near future.
