Evacuations Ordered in California Over Unstable Chemical Tank Risk

(MENAFN) Authorities in Southern California have ordered the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents in parts of Orange County after a damaged industrial chemical tank was deemed potentially unstable and at risk of leaking or exploding, according to reports.

The emergency centers on a facility in Garden Grove, where a pressurized storage tank containing thousands of gallons of methyl methacrylate, a highly flammable chemical used in plastic manufacturing, began releasing vapors, prompting a major response from fire and emergency services.

Officials initially reported that the situation appeared to stabilize after cooling efforts were carried out using external water sprays. However, further assessment later revealed that early temperature readings had only measured the outer surface of the tank, while internal conditions continued to rise.

Subsequent monitoring showed increasing heat levels inside the container, raising concerns that pressure could continue to build. Emergency teams warned that the structure remained compromised, with damaged valves preventing proper release of pressure or safe removal of the chemical contents.

By the weekend, internal temperatures were reported to have increased further, with officials describing a steady upward trend. The ongoing risk prompted authorities to maintain evacuation orders affecting up to 50,000 residents while containment efforts continued.

State officials declared an emergency in the area as specialized response teams worked to stabilize the situation and prevent a potential industrial disaster.
