EU Chief Welcomes US-Iran Diplomatic Progress
(MENAFN) According to reports, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has expressed support for reported progress toward a potential agreement between the United States and Iran, emphasizing the importance of reducing regional tensions and preventing further escalation.
Von der Leyen stated on X that she welcomes developments toward an agreement and stressed the need for a deal that meaningfully de-escalates the conflict, restores full freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, and ensures what she described as unrestricted passage.
She also reiterated the EU’s position that Iran “must not be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon,” while calling on Tehran to halt activities she characterized as destabilizing, including actions carried out directly or through allied groups, as well as repeated attacks on neighboring states.
She further added that Europe will continue cooperating with international partners to take advantage of what she described as a diplomatic opening, with the aim of achieving a durable settlement. She also warned that the wider conflict risks spilling over into global economic systems, particularly affecting energy markets and supply chains.
These remarks follow statements attributed to US President Donald Trump, who said an agreement with Iran was “largely negotiated” after discussions with regional leaders, though final details reportedly remain under negotiation.
