India, US Expand Energy Cooperation as Jaishankar Emphasizes Security
(MENAFN) According to reports, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has highlighted the country’s push to deepen energy cooperation with the United States as part of a broader strategy to strengthen energy security for its large population.
Jaishankar made the remarks during bilateral discussions in New Delhi with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, where both sides reviewed energy, trade, and strategic cooperation alongside wider geopolitical developments.
He stressed that India’s primary responsibility is ensuring affordable and reliable energy access for its population of around 1.4 billion people, adding that expanding diversified energy sources is central to national energy security. He also noted that both governments have recently welcomed growth in energy trade, framing it as a stabilizing factor in bilateral relations.
According to reports, Jaishankar said that energy affordability remains a core policy objective, particularly given India’s dependence on imports. He also emphasized the importance of keeping global energy markets stable and avoiding disruptions to maritime trade routes.
The discussions also touched on regional security concerns, including the need to maintain safe and uninterrupted shipping through critical waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz, which is vital for energy flows from the Middle East to Asia.
US officials, including Rubio during his visit, described India as an important strategic partner and discussed broader cooperation across defense, technology, and supply chain resilience, alongside energy security and regional stability efforts.
