WHO Reports Twelve Cases in Cruise Ship Hantavirus Outbreak
(MENAFN) The World Health Organization said Friday that the number of reported hantavirus cases connected to an outbreak aboard a cruise ship has increased to 12, according to updates shared during a media briefing.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Dutch authorities confirmed an additional infection involving a crew member who disembarked in Tenerife, Spain, before being repatriated to the Netherlands, where the individual has remained in isolation.
Health officials said the outbreak has now resulted in 12 confirmed cases and three reported deaths. No new fatalities have been recorded since May 2, when the incident was first reported to the WHO.
"We continue to urge affected countries to monitor all passengers and crew carefully for the remainder of the quarantine period," Tedros said.
The WHO added that more than 600 contacts across 30 countries are still being monitored, while authorities continue efforts to locate a limited number of high-risk contacts.
Tedros also expressed appreciation to the countries involved in the response effort and ongoing epidemiological investigation into the outbreak.
