Newsom Announces Emergency in Orange County Over Chemical Incident

(MENAFN) California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in Orange County on Saturday as officials responded to a hazardous chemical incident at an aerospace facility in Garden Grove, according to a statement.

State agencies were deployed for more than 24 hours to support local authorities and help safeguard public safety as emergency operations continued, he said.

The declaration came after concerns were raised over a storage tank at the GKN Aerospace facility containing an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate, a hazardous industrial substance that authorities said had begun overheating and emitting toxic fumes.

Officials warned that despite ongoing containment efforts, there remained a possibility of a “catastrophic failure” that could trigger an uncontrolled release of dangerous chemicals.

Newsom said local responders did not have the capacity to handle an incident of this magnitude, which led to the decision to escalate the response to the state level.

He also noted that the California National Guard could be activated if needed to assist with emergency response and relief operations.
