Iran Slams Rubio Over Energy, Nuclear Remarks, Claims He Distorts Reality
(MENAFN) Iran on Sunday pushed back strongly against remarks made by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, accusing him of misrepresenting facts regarding global energy markets and Tehran’s nuclear program during his visit to India, according to a statement.
The Iranian side said the comments were an effort to mislead public perception of regional developments and shift focus away from what it described as destabilizing actions by the United States and Israel.
In his remarks on Saturday, Rubio said the United States would not allow Iran to hold the energy market "hostage," and reiterated that Tehran must never obtain nuclear weapons.
Responding to those claims, the statement argued that the real disruption to global energy stability has come from Washington’s sanctions on Iranian oil exports.
"What has held the global energy market hostage over recent years has been the unlawful and unjust sanctions imposed by the United States on Iran’s oil exports; sanctions that have been designed and enforced in violation of the principles of international law and the charter of the United Nations, with the aim of exerting economic pressure on the Iranian nation."
It further accused Washington and Tel Aviv of fueling global instability and pursuing their strategic goals through disorder and insecurity.
"These two regimes (US and Israel) are the principal drivers behind the escalation of global security and energy crises and seek to advance their political and military objectives through the creation of instability and insecurity,"
