Trump, Qatar's Emir Hold Urgent Call on US-Iran Peace Efforts

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani spoke by phone Saturday to coordinate on intensifying diplomatic efforts to bring a durable end to the conflict between Washington and Tehran, the Amiri Diwan of Qatar announced.

The two leaders reviewed rapidly shifting regional dynamics, with a shared focus on consolidating the fragile calm that has taken hold since April's ceasefire.

"They discussed the latest developments in the region, particularly regional and international efforts aimed at consolidating calm and de-escalating tensions, foremost among them supporting the diplomatic efforts led by Pakistan to spare the region further tension and preserve international peace and security," a statement said.

"The call also addressed the importance of continuing dialogue to address current issues, safeguarding maritime security and the safety of strategic waterways, and ensuring the smooth flow of global supply and energy chains."

Sheikh Tamim used the call to reaffirm Doha's unwavering commitment to peaceful resolution, voicing support for all ongoing diplomatic tracks aimed at containing the crisis and advancing broader regional and international stability.

Ceasefire Holds — But a Lasting Deal Remains Elusive
The backdrop to Saturday's call is a region still walking a diplomatic tightrope. Hostilities erupted in February when the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran. Tehran hit back with retaliatory attacks on Israel and US allies across the Gulf, simultaneously shutting down the Strait of Hormuz — a move that sent shockwaves through global energy markets.

A Pakistani-brokered ceasefire came into force on April 8, but follow-up negotiations in Islamabad failed to solidify a permanent agreement. President Trump subsequently extended the truce indefinitely, leaving the region in a state of cautious but unresolved tension.

Diplomatic activity is now accelerating on multiple fronts. Pakistan's army chief is currently in Tehran as part of intensified brokering efforts, with key sticking points on the table reported to include the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, Iran's nuclear program, and Tehran's longstanding demand for sanctions relief.
