EuroLeague Final Four Marred by Security Chaos

(MENAFN) EuroLeague faced a torrent of criticism on Friday after a string of organizational and security breakdowns cast a long shadow over the Final Four semifinal between Olympiacos and Fenerbahce Beko in Athens — tarnishing what is widely considered the pinnacle event of the European club basketball calendar.

The showpiece occasion at the Telekom Center was overshadowed before and during the match by crowd management failures, widespread ticketing disruptions, and mounting security concerns that left supporters and club officials furious.

Ticketless Rival Fans Allegedly Admitted
Hundreds of Fenerbahce supporters reportedly found themselves locked out of the arena despite clutching valid tickets, as technical malfunctions and confusion at entry points created gridlock at the gates. Large queues built up outside the venue as Greek security personnel and EuroLeague officials struggled to stabilize the ticket verification system, according to statements from the Turkish club and its representatives.

Compounding the outrage, a number of Olympiacos supporters were reportedly waved through without proper ticket checks, while their ticketed Turkish counterparts remained stranded outside. Seating arrangements inside the arena also broke down, with some Fenerbahce fans reportedly scattered among rival supporters — a situation that generated several tense flashpoints, ultimately requiring police intervention to prevent further escalation.

Seats Reserved for Players' Families Reportedly Occupied
The disorder reached beyond the terraces. Transportation carrying family members of Fenerbahce players was said to have arrived late to the venue due to coordination failures involving local authorities and traffic management. Club representatives further alleged that seats set aside for players' families had been occupied by unauthorized individuals, and that EuroLeague officials failed to act despite repeated complaints.

Fenerbahce Demands Accountability
Fenerbahce board member Cem Ciritci pulled no punches in his response, branding the events "unacceptable" and demanding a full public reckoning from EuroLeague leadership.

"If it is true that ticketless individuals were admitted while ticket-holding supporters were kept outside, this is no longer a simple organizational failure, but a direct violation of fan rights and a collapse of organizational credibility," Ciritci said in a statement posted through US social media company X.

He rejected any attempt by EuroLeague to characterize the situation as a routine "disruption," demanding that organizers identify those responsible and put in place a concrete mechanism to compensate supporters who were affected.

"This is not only a Fenerbahce issue," he said. "It is an issue concerning the reputation of European basketball."
