Alwaleed Philanthropies (Global) Advances Accessible Housing and Sustainable Cities at WUF13
(MENAFN- OMC) Baku, [21 May 2026] — Alwaleed Philanthropies (Global), chaired by His Royal Highness Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Al Saud, participated in the World Urban Forum 13 (WUF13) in Baku with key engagements on addressing urban challenges and advancing sustainable urbanisation across the Arab world.
Her Royal Highness Princess Lamia Bint Majed Al Saud participated in WUF13 as Secretary General of Alwaleed Philanthropies and UN-Habitat Goodwill Ambassador for the Arab Region, and in her capacity as Member of the Board of Trustees of the Developmental Housing Foundation (Sakan), as part of the official Saudi delegation to WUF13 led by His Excellency Majed Al-Hogail, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Municipalities and Housing.
HRH Princess Lamia contributed to a high-level programmatic session and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UN-Habitat, establishing a two-year initiative to deliver 100 accessible housing units benefiting over 2,000 people with disabilities in Tunisia.
"Alwaleed Philanthropies’ housing initiatives across the Arab region have demonstrated that when we provide families and individuals with safe, dignified housing, we create pathways to independence, livelihood, and true social inclusion. Our engagement at WUF13 reflects our conviction that inclusive housing is a necessity that transforms lives and strengthens communities.”, said HRH Princess Lamia Bint Majed Al Saud, Secretary General of Alwaleed Philanthropies. "This MOU with UN-Habitat advances our commitment by integrating universal design principles, renewable energy solutions, and smart home technologies into housing units for persons with disabilities, while strengthening capacity-building programs that support their independence. We are creating a scalable model we can replicate across the region that transforms how housing serves those who need it most.”
These engagements built on Alwaleed Philanthropies' seven-year partnership with UN-Habitat, which supports sustainable urbanisation projects and solutions addressing critical urban challenges across the Arab region. During the forum, the delegation also held bilateral meetings with H.E. Rashad Hasanov, Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport of the Republic of Azerbaijan, H.E. Dr. Maimunah Sharif, former Executive Director of UN-Habitat and former Mayor of Kuala Lumpur, Bahar Muradova, Chairperson of the State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and Directors of Arab States for UN-Habitat to advance dialogue on inclusive urban development as part of HRH Princess Lamia’s role as UN-Habitat Goodwill Ambassador for the Arab States.
HRH Princess Lamia participated in a panel titled "The Social and Economic Power of Housing," alongside Her Excellency Anacláudia Rossbach, Executive Director of UN-Habitat, addressing housing as an economic engine and social equaliser.
The MOU signing with UN-Habitat, held in the presence of HRH Princess Lamia Bint Majed Al Saud, Slah Zouari, Minister of Equipment and Housing of the Republic of Tunisia, and H.E. Anacláudia Rossbach marks a concrete step forward in scaling inclusive housing solutions and addressing the critical need for accessible and sustainable urban housing across the region. Following the signing ceremony, both leaders held a joint press conference to highlight the initiative's significance for inclusive urban development in the Arab region.
