A decorated truck has emerged as one of the more memorable presences in the Giardini this week. UK artist Alvaro Barrington (b. 1983) has installed Labor Day Parade '91 (2026) at the 61st Venice Biennale as part of In Minor Keys, transforming a working vehicle into a dense, image-filled artwork with a distinctly personal charge.

The piece is a haulage truck covered in scenes connected to Barrington's background and layered with art-historical references. Barrington said he drove the lorry from London to Venice himself, folding the journey into the work's meaning. That route gives the installation a narrative dimension that extends beyond the object on view: the trip becomes part of the artwork's biography.

Placed in the Giardini near the Austrian pavilion, the truck has already drawn a steady crowd. On preview day, it was admired by artist Julie Mehretu and Jessica Morgan, director of Dia Art Foundation, both of whom responded warmly to the work. Barrington also said the front tyres were punctured, preventing the vehicle from moving. The detail matters. It keeps the truck fixed in place, even as its form suggests motion, transit, and the possibility of disruption.

That tension between movement and stasis gives Labor Day Parade '91 much of its force. The work reads at once as sculpture, installation, and a kind of staged arrival. In a Biennale often defined by national pavilions and carefully managed routes through the city, Barrington's truck offers a more unruly kind of presence: one that arrives with its own history, its own references, and its own sense of momentum.
