Stevie Marsden
- Lecturer in Publishing, Edinburgh Napier University
I am a Publishing Studies and Creative Industries scholar. My research interests lie in the UK Publishing industry, with a specific focus on its position as a Creative Industry and interdisciplinary approaches to understanding the book in contemporary culture. I am particularly interested in access and equity within Publishing in terms of accessibility and employment in the industry (especially for those from working class backgrounds). I am also interested in hierarchies of culture and have expertise in prize culture(s), as well as a growing interest in the book as object being a signifier of prestige and cultural esteem.
My most recent publishing 'Publishing as a Creative Industry' was published in April 2025 with Routledge. This study considers the position of the book publishing industry within the contemporary cultural economy. Through a focused analysis on the culture(s) and organisation(s) of book publishing in the UK, it demonstrates how this creative industry reflects, and perpetuates, many of the key issues and challenges, including inequalities in representation, cultural and economic dominance of global conglomerates, and hierarchies of value, already recognised as central within the creative industries in the UK and beyond. The book remedies a gap in knowledge, providing an examination of book publishing in the UK within the wider context of the creative industries and the existing academic discourse.
Before joining Napier in August 2021, I was a tutor in publishing on Manchester Metropolitan University's MA Publishing programme (2020-2021) and a Research Associate at CAMEo Research Institute for Cultural and Media Economies at the University of Leicester (2017-2020).
I am the Programme Leader of the MSc Publishing programme. Our programme positions the Publishing Industry within the wider Creative Industries, with students learning interdisciplinary and transferable skills that prepare them for creative careers. My teaching is student-centred and embraces a strong social, ethical and inclusive ethos. The programme provides the specialist training and experience students need to pursue a career in publishing and other related industries.
